I would assume it was true. I recall as a kid getting used to swimming in the deep end of a pool, but being more afraid of water 20' deep than water10' deep, being more afraid of water 30' deep, than 20' & so on. It became increasingly evident that once water's over your head, it doesn't make much difference. The idea that it does seems to be pervasive among a lot of people, who seem to be more awestruck by virtical extremes than horizontal ones(Like distance from shore, which is much more of an issue) Very deep water can have an indirect threat. If you're in water 100' deep, you probably won't reach shallow water in any short swim unless the bottum has an abrupt slope. I have been in water like that. In a swim I took in the Columbia River 25 years ago in Wenatchee Wa.I wasn't hardly any distance from the bank when I made a breathhold dive for the bottom.
